Using a Closed MacBook with an External Monitor (Clamshell Mode)
How to configure a MacBook so you can use it with an external monitor when the screen lid is closed.

Previously I wrote about the keyboard shortcut to mirror a MacBook screen to an external monitor. I needed that because I couldn’t see half of my broken MacBook screen.
While it worked great, it felt strange to keep the MacBook open with a blank or damaged display while looking at the external monitor. I have several wireless and Bluetooth mice and keyboards at home, so I wondered: can I connect my MacBook to an external monitor, use my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and close the MacBook lid?
At first, I thought it was impossible because the MacBook goes to sleep immediately whenever the lid is closed.
Turns out, there is a way to do it. People call it MacBook Clamshell Mode.

To activate MacBook Clamshell Mode, follow these steps:
- Connect your MacBook to a charger. You can use a USB-C or MagSafe connector.
- Connect an external keyboard and/or mouse. Wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4 GHz wireless peripherals all work.
- Connect your external monitor or display. You can use HDMI, DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt.
- (Optional) Connect your wired or bluetooth speaker / headset.
- Close your MacBook lid, and you’ll see macOS appear on the external monitor.
- You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode. Use it just like you normally do.
Note: If you plan to connect your MacBook with charger 24/7, consider manually limit the battery charge to 80%. This’ll keep your battery healthier and prevent swollen battery.
